NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service) – Tennessee State University’s Mobile Biodiesel Education Demonstration is going on tour. Live biodiesel production demonstrations will be held at five locations this spring, providing people across the state with an up-close look at the biodiesel production process and educational information on real-world production scenarios.

According to TSU assistant professor of agronomy and soil sciences Dr. Jason de Koff who will be leading the tour, the production of biodiesel fuel from vegetable oil is a viable process that can replace traditional fuel used in existing diesel engines.

“This process can go a long way toward helping ease the financial burden of fuel costs,” he said. “It is possible [farmers] could become totally self-sufficient in diesel fuel use.”

The five dates on the Spring 2014 tour are:

TSU receives $10,000 award for minority youth to attend 4-H Youth summer development program

PrintNASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service)  – Tennessee State University Cooperative Extension’s 4-H/Youth Development Program, housed in the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Sciences has been selected as the recipient of $10,000 in funding to be distributed through scholarships for minority youths to attend the 2014 Citizenship Washington Focus program this summer in Washington, D.C.

The award, supported by Farm Credit and distributed through the National 4-H Council, will pay for the registration, lodging, meals and travel arrangements for six minority youth participants and one adult chaperone.

The CWF program, attended by several thousand young people from across the country, is held every summer and provides youth ages 14-19 with an opportunity to improve their communication and leadership skills through various hands-on activities and programs that teach civic and social responsibility. Students participating in CWF also get an up-close look at the nation’s Capitol and meet members of Congress.

“Citizenship Washington Focus is one of the best leadership opportunities for youth in this country,” said Dr. Latif Lighari, associate dean for Extension in the CAHNS. “We are extremely excited to have this opportunity to provide scholarships to minority youth who may not otherwise have had the chance to participate.”

Dr. Thomas Broyles, Extension Program Leader for 4-H/Youth Development at TSU, will coordinate the selection and participation of scholarship recipients.

College of Business Accreditation Reaffirmed, Commended for Strengths and Effective Practices

AACSB_low_res_blueNASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service) – The College of Business at Tennessee State University has successfully maintained its accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the organization announced recently.

In a letter informing the dean and administration of the reaffirmation of the undergraduate and graduate business programs, the AACSB International commended the college for its “strengths and effective practices.”

It cited, among other achievements, the establishment of “specific” advisory boards that have helped the college gain wide access to industry and the business community; the successful development of an intra-university partnership, which promotes the university and the college’s missions; as well as the development of program initiatives designed to improve retention and graduation.

The AACSB International Executive Vice President and Chief Accrediting Officer, Robert D. Reid, congratulated the university and college administrations, students, faculty and staff for the achievement. He noted that it takes “a great deal” of commitment and determination to earn and maintain an AACSB International accreditation, and applauded the University for initiating efforts, which have helped to distinguish the TSU business program.

“Business schools must not only meet specific standards of excellence, but their deans, faculty and professional staff must make a commitment to ongoing continuous improvement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver the highest quality of education to students,” Reid said.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mark Hardy, in congratulating the Dean, Dr. Millicent Lownes-Jackson and the faculty, staff and student of the College of Business, called the reaccreditation “an outstanding” achievement for the college.

“The reaffirmation demonstrates the quality of the instruction and the exceptional nature of the learning environment that is evident in the college,” he said. “I am extremely pleased the college continues to be a distinguished leader among business schools in Nashville and across the country.”

For Dean Lownes-Jackson, upon hearing the news of the reaffirmation, she gave the credit to her “outstanding” faculty, “vibrant” corporate advisory boards, and “dedicated” staff and administrators.

“Our success in maintaining AACSB International accreditation is built on the solid framework of dynamic faculty who are committed to providing quality instruction for our business students and who produce meaningful academic research that informs business thinking and academic practices globally,” Lownes-Jackson said.

Like the AACSB International, the dean said the corporate advisory boards of the college help to ensure the curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills that the business world needs.

“This is also attributed to our dedicated staff and administrators who work tirelessly to make our college a warm and supportive environment to propel student learning and ultimately, future career achievement,” Dr. Lownes-Jackson added.

Called the “hallmark of excellence” in business education, AACSB International accreditation is held by less than 5 percent of the world’s business programs, according to the AACSB International webpage. Only 687 institutions in 50 countries and territories hold AACSB accreditations.

TSU holds the distinction of the being the first public university in Nashville to attain the AACSB International accreditation in 1994, and the first public HBCU in the nation to simultaneously receive the accreditation in its undergraduate and graduate business programs the same year.

This achievement has not only been in words, but also in the caliber of students the college continues to graduate and how those graduates are impacting the world in various industries. In its annual “People & Places Readers’ Poll” of the Best of Nashville for 2012, the “Nashville Scene” designated the TSU MBA Program one of the best MBA programs in the area.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tiger great and NFL standout Claude Humphrey has been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Humphrey, along with Ray Guy, earned the 80 percent positive vote to earn election. Humphrey and Guy are joined by Derrick Brooks, Walter Jones, Andre Reed, Michael Strahan and Aeneas Williams as the Class of 2014. The Enshrinement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

Humphrey was an All-American defensive tackle at TSU who went on to be one of the greatest passes rushers in the National Football League. Humphrey played for the Tigers from 1964 to 1967. He was initially an Offensive Tackle, but was switched to Defensive End in his freshman year, where he became a three-time All-American.

During his senior season, Humphrey played in four college all-star games: the Senior Bowl, the Blue-Gray Game, the Coaches All-American Game and the College All-Star game.

Humphrey ended his collegiate career as the all-time leader in sacks at TSU with 39. Currently, he is tied for second behind Lamar Carter along with fellow TSU legend and NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent.

He was selected in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft going third overall to the Atlanta Falcons. During his rookie season in Atlanta, he was name AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Humphrey played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons (1968-74, 76-77) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1979-81).

While with Atlanta, he was named All-NFL or All-Pro eight times and was selected to the Pro Bowl on six different occasions.

During the 1980 season with the Eagles, Humphrey totaled a team-high 14.5 sacks on the way to an NFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl XV.

Even though the sack didn’t become an official NFL statistic until after he retired, Humphrey is still credited with 122 career sacks, including holding the all-time career sacks mark for the Falcons with 94.5.

Humphrey is in the Tennessee State University Hall of Fame, the Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Falcons Hall of Fame, and his high schools Hall of Fame. Humphrey’s college and high schools both retired his jersey.

Tennessee State University to Host National African American Read-In Feb. 2

aari_430x207NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – The 25th annual celebration of National African American Read-In is on Sunday, Feb. 2. Tennessee State University will join schools, churches, libraries, book clubs and professional organizations across the country and the world to participate in programs marking the event.

The event at TSU will be held in the Humanities Building Room 113, from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Endorsed by the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English, the goal of the event is to celebrate African and African-American literary art, and to make literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

Organizers are inviting  the public and asking teachers and professors to find “creative ways” to inspire their students to attend the one-hour read-in.

The 2014 African American Read-In events at TSU are sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts.

To ensure participants do not miss out on the Super Bowl game on Sunday, organizers guarantee that the event will end “long before” kick-off time.

According to organizers, the University has participated in the read-in every year. Last year more than 40 students took part in the event, which is held every February during Black History Month to urge organizations and citizens to make literacy a significant part of the month, by hosting and coordinating read-ins in their communities.

During the past 24 years, more than a million readers of all ethnic groups from the United States, the West Indies, African countries and more have participated in the event. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

The Read-In is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Luke Powers at 615.963.5716 or [email protected].

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Tennessee State defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will play in Super Bowl XLVIII.

The Broncos’ defensive back is one of more than a dozen players and coaches with ties to the region competing in the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

Rodgers-Cromartie will be the third Tiger in the past four years to reach the NFL’s championship game, joining former teammates Anthony Levine, who was on the Green Bay Packers’ roster in 2011 and the Baltimore Ravens’ in 2013, and Lamar Divens, whose San Francisco 49ers fell to the Ravens last year.

This season, Rodgers-Cromartie has recorded 31 tackles (25 solo) and intercepted three passes, leading Denver to a 15-3 record (including playoffs).

Rodgers-Cromartie was part of the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 when they played in Super Bowl XLIII.

Rodgers-Cromartie is in his sixth year as a professional and has amassed 246 stops (222 solo), 19 interceptions and five touchdowns while playing for three different teams. This is Rodgers-Cromartie’s first season with the Broncos.

While at TSU, opposing quarterbacks completed just 55 of 161 passes (34.2 percent) thrown in Rodgers-Cromartie’s area. He intercepted 11 of those throws, deflected 25 and held the opposition to 3.54 yards per pass attempt.

In addition to his football career, Rodgers-Cromartie was also a standout performer for TSU’s track team. He qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regionals in 2007 by winning the Ohio Valley Conference long jump title.

During the OVC Indoor Track Championships, Rodgers-Cromartie was named the top male athlete after winning the 60-meter dash, long jump and high jump and finished second in the triple-jump.

Rodgers-Cromartie is one of 20 Tigers to reach the Super Bowl.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service) – Tennessee State University is playing a major role in agricultural research, education and outreach in the nation, a senior U.S. federal government official said in Nashville Tuesday.

Krysta Harden, deputy secretary of Agriculture, in remarks before farmers, USDA and state agency representatives, as well as TSU students and faculty, said the University “is really committed” to educating young people about the importance of agriculture not only as a discipline but as a viable career option.

“We have a very hungry world, and it is going to get hungrier and bigger,” Harden said. “As such, we need wonderful institutions like TSU to provide the education and research, and folks like the residents of Tennessee to be able to produce more food.”

The Deputy Secretary, who spoke during a one-day visit at TSU, also met with senior University officials, including President Dr. Glenda Glover, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mark Hardy; and Dr. Chandra Reddy, dean of the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resources.

Speaking to reporters, Harden described the partnership between TSU and the U.S. Department of Agriculture as “very rewarding and meaningful.” Although she joined the Department only few years ago, she said she is well aware of the relationship between the two.

“Our relationship with TSU goes far back not only in the areas of education, outreach and research, but in infrastructure that supports our mission and that of the University,” Harden said. “We thank you for this partnership.”

Highlighting the Deputy Secretary’s visit was a tour of the new 25,000 square-foot, $8 million USDA-funded state-of-the-art Agricultural Biotechnology Research Building on the University’s main campus. The building, expected to be dedicated in April, will provide laboratory space for more than 10 new Ph.D.-level scientists, research rooms for graduate students, and high-efficiency HVAC systems and laboratories.

“We see this as a remarkable investment in the future of this institution and its students,” Harden said during the tour, accompanied by Dean Reddy and officials of CAHNS.

Earlier in a meeting with other stakeholders including the Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture, Julius Johnson, Extension workers and faculty of CAHNS, the Secretary announced that negotiations are almost complete on a long-overdue Farm Bill that will set new spending levels for some farming and agricultural priorities.

“Due to progress made so far, I am increasingly optimistic that a workable and effective Farm Bill will be approved by Congress in the very near future,” said Harden. “Passage of the bill will finally help bring some certainty to producers, their lenders, and others.”

In a presentation prior to the Secretary’s remarks, Dean Reddy thanked the USDA for its support and the continuing partnership between the federal agency and TSU. He pointed to the “sustained” growth in his college, including $55 million in research, 1,100 students, among them 150 paid graduate students, and an Extension program that serves 47 counties, up from 12 in 2007.

“Our research efforts have also expanded significantly,” Reddy said. “We have grown to about 100 faculty, 250 employees, and more than 1,000 students, while undergraduate enrollment has doubled in agriculture and allied fields, and the graduate enrollment in agriculture has increased seven-fold.”

He said the visit of Secretary Harden was a significant achievement for TSU.

“In addition to Secretary Harden, to have on our campus the Commissioner of Agriculture, the Farm Bureau representatives, different farm service organizations, and all the heads of USDA state agencies, including the Natural Resource Conservation Services; the Farm Service Agency, and the Rural Development Agency, at the same time is very significant,” the Dean said. “And for the Secretary to see first hand what we are doing, and talk to our students, faculty and staff, really helps and serves as an encouragement for all of us, and we are very thankful.”

Secretary Harden’s visit culminated with a luncheon with University officials, and federal and state agriculture officials, in the President’s Dining Area in Kean Hall.

“DREAMGIRLS” Comes to Tennessee State University Jan. 23-Feb. 2

Dreamgirls PosterNASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service) – The Broadway musical DREAMGIRLS makes its debut January 23 through February 2 at Tennessee State University, and tells the story of a make-believe, all-female group that makes it big in the 1960s and 1970s while facing the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame.

Presented by the Circle Players in collaboration with Tennessee State University, the play will take place at the Cox-Lewis Theatre in the Performing Arts Center.

Performances take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on January 26 and February 2 at 3 p.m. A Saturday matinee takes place February 1 at 3 p.m.

Dreamgirls takes audience members to a time when rhythm and blues blended with other styles of popular music creating a new American sound…a time when music lovers were screaming at Elvis and listening to the Beatles, but were dancing to the new beat of countless groups like The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Shirelles and The Temtations. Dreamgirls doesn’t just focus on singing, dancing and performing, but also the behind-the-scenes reality of the entertainment industry…the business part of show business that made possible this cultural phenomenon.

Dreamgirls has a memorable score that features R&B flavored songs, many of which may be familiar to audiences, especially the title song, Dreamgirls, and the powerful solo And I am Tellin’ You. The music, singing and choreography of Steppin to the Bad Side will have audiences tapping and clapping along.

The music direction is by Dianna Poe, former TSU Choir Director and voice instructor, and director of the Nashville Symphony MLK Celebration Choir. Choreography is by Ashley Danielle and Tim Larson, and also serves as production manager.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors 60 and older. Special discount tickets are available for $11 on Thursday, Jan. 30. Group rates are available for 10 or more by calling 615.332.7529 or [email protected].

TSU student tickets are $5 and $10 for faculty and staff. Ticket discounts are available in person with campus ID at the Performing Arts Center box office prior to any performance.
