Research Summit Showcases Growing Partnership and $300,000 Investment in Collaborative Research

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TSU News Service) – For more than a century, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) and the Tennessee State University College of Agriculture (TSUAg) have shared a unified mission: serving Tennessee’s agricultural communities and the people of the Volunteer State. Now, building on years of shared history and a recent push toward deeper research alignment, Tennessee’s two land-grant institutions are elevating their partnership to a new level. What began with exploratory conversations has blossomed into tangible results: six jointly funded research projects and a coordinated strategy to pursue high-impact competitive grants.

On Octo. 23, TSUAg hosted the fifth TSU–UTIA Research Summit, themed “Strengthening Collaborative Research,” at the Farrell-Westbrook Agricultural Complex. TSU President Dwayne Tucker delivered opening remarks, joining TSUAg Dean Dr. Chandra Reddy and UT AgResearch Dean Dr. Hongwei Xin in welcoming researchers from across both campuses.

At the heart of the summit was a $300,000 joint seed-funding initiative launched earlier this year by TSUAg, UT AgResearch, and UT’s Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development. Six cross-institutional teams were awarded $50,000 each to address pressing issues impacting Tennessee producers, communities, and natural resources. Project presentations highlighted diverse research areas, including enhancing the nutritional quality of tomatoes through metabolomics, developing low-cost monitoring tools for nursery and beef operations, advancing plant genetic engineering, applying remote sensing to agroforestry, soil health, forest management, and extracting functional proteins from spirulina for high-value applications.

For Dr. Xin, the collaboration yields exponential value. “One plus one equals four,” he noted, emphasizing how combining specialized expertise, facilities, and resources multiplies institutional impact.

That synergy is already yielding results for TSUAg plant scientist Dr. Sonali Roy, who is collaborating with TSUAg’s Dr. Suping Zhou and UTIA’s Dr. Feng Chen on tomato enhancement.

“The collaboration with Dr. Chen is invaluable because he brings metabolomics capabilities we don’t have in-house,” Roy said. “It allows us to pursue brand-new research directions that neither institution could address alone.”

Dr. Timothy Rials, associate dean of UT AgResearch, highlighted that seed funding enables teams to generate crucial preliminary data and demonstrate joint execution, key prerequisites for securing major federal grants. “Nobody can do it all anymore,” Rials said, pointing to the necessity of inter-institutional collaboration.

Coordinated by Rials and Dr. Fulya Baysal-Gurel, TSUAg associate dean for research, the seed initiative strengthens a broader partnership that spans Extension programs and an evolving summit series. University leaders expressed optimism about launching a second round of collaborative seed funding soon.
