Tennessee State University’s cybersecurity research initiative is officially on the “FaST” track to success, thanks to a new summer appointment at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).
Dr. Sachin Shetty, an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, will head to ANL alongside undergraduate students Grantland Gray and Corie Wilson. Their participation in the 10-week Faculty and Student Teams (FaST) program is funded through a $22,000 grant administered by ANL’s Division of Educational Programs, in partnership with the DOE and the National Science Foundation.
“This experience will be the catalyst needed to accelerate TSU’s cybersecurity program,” Shetty said.
Under the supervision of Dr. Todd Munson from ANL’s Mathematics and Computer Science division, the TSU team will collaborate with laboratory staff to address high-priority cybersecurity and intrusion detection challenges. Their primary focus will be developing and solving statistical and stochastic models to optimize intrusion detection systems.
“While the DOE invests in technologies to fight cyberattacks, our students get to be part of the research that plays a critical role in protecting the nation’s energy infrastructure,” Shetty said.
The program offers more than just lab time—Gray and Wilson will spend the summer gaining hands-on research experience, networking, and building relationships with student and faculty researchers from across the country.
