Dr. Ricky L. Jones

NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – The topic of hazing at colleges and universities has become front-page news recently with a string of allegations ranging from hazing of band members, Greek organizations and even sporting teams. In a recent study, nearly 55 percent of college students surveyed across the county reported having been hazed in fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, or other student groups.

The TSU Distinguished Lecture Series will take an in-depth look at this hot topic when they welcome Ricky L. Jones, Ph.D., Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Poag Auditorium.

The Culture of Hazing in Black Greek-Lettered Organizations” will be the focus of the lecture, and is free and open to the public.

Jones is a full professor and past chair of the University of Louisville’s Department of Pan-African Studies as well as the director of the University’s Center on Race and Inequality. Jones is an honors graduate in Political Science from Morehouse College and only the second African American to receive a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Kentucky where he specialized in Political Philosophy and Comparative Politics.

He is the author of Black Haze: Violence, Sacrifice, and Manhood in Black Greek-Letter Fraternities and What’s Wrong with Obamamania?: Black America, Black Leadership, and the Death of Political Imagination.
