NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – An associate professor at Tennessee State University has been named to the National Advisory Committee on Meat & Poultry Inspection.

Dr. Fur-Chi Chen, a food researcher in the Department of Family and Consumer Science at the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Sciences, was named to the committee by the USDA and will serve a two-year term.

Established in 1971, the purpose of the committee is to provide advice to the Secretary of Agriculture concerning state and federal programs involving meat, poultry and processed eggs over inspection, food safety and other matters.

Its advice falls under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) and the Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA).

Although it does not meet often, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service DSIS Tuesday published notice in the Federal Register, saying the Meat and Poultry Inspection group will continue for two more years.

According to FSIS, the 20-member committee usually meets twice a year. It’s last meeting was last March 21.
