Alumna and member of the Tennessee State University Vintagers, Juanita M. Thomas passed away at her home on August 10 from complications following a stroke. Her sister, Lily Boyd, 104, and caregivers were at her bedside. She was 101.
Born in 1909, Thomas was from Linden, Tenn., and was a 1940 TSU graduate majoring in elementary education. Thomas went on to enjoy a long career as a teacher before retiring to live out her golden years with her sister in Nashville.
After graduating from TSU, Thomas maintained a close connection with her alma mater by joining the Alumni Association and serving as a member of the TSU Vintagers. In addition to being one of the Vintagers, Thomas remained an active member of Lee Chapel AME Church.
Thomas leaves behind her last surviving sibling and fellow TSU alumna, Boyd; her sister-in-law, Ms. Ethel B. Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Thomas and her sister recently came to TSU for the annual TSU Vintager’s 39st Anniversary Celebration and the Summer 2010 Commencement Ceremony held in early August.
